We are heading to the Netherlands in order to help the client of this reference project!

Our client, a Dutch wood processing company, invented a new wood treatment process that would give the wood particular properties. Unfortunately, the new process had some very severe side effects in the form of disruptive odors.

 

The problem.

The treatment process resulted in high pollutant emissions, which in turn caused odor problems with the neighbors. They filed complaints to the local authorities, which forced the company to try removing the odors. They tried different technical solutions, such as activated carbons or alumina beads impregnated with potassium permanganate, but none of this worked.

The main problem was the extreme concentration levels of the pollutants (3400 ppm). In addition, the compounds—composed mostly of pinenes, limonene, hexanoic and heptanoic acids—were difficult to remove in themselves. To further complicate the situation, the local authorities required an odor removal rate of 90 %.

The solution.

To tackle this difficult situation, we at Mellifiq went for a system combination of an Ozonetech RENA Pro B3 ozone system in combination with a Nodora AOP UV reactor.

The combination of ozone and UV is known as advanced oxidation due to the synergy between these two components. This synergy increases the efficiency of the treatment. Since this case was especially difficult to solve, the reactor used here was designed and custom-made by us based on our client’s treatment needs. We incorporated the most powerful UV lamps for air treatment available on the market in order to maximize the treatment effect.

Evaluation.

Since our system combination was commissioned, almost no odor is emitted from the process, and the odor removal rate consistently reaches 90% as demanded by local authorities.

Our client could not be happier and with our system in place, they are confident that they will be able to keep satisfying the 90% odor removal rate in the future as well.
