Introduction.

This elementary school looks forward to having a lower carbon footprint by using our ozone solution

For this project, we are helping out a public elementary school for children in the fourth through the ninth grade. It is located in a municipality very close to one of Sweden’s biggest cities, and it has a splendid view over a nearby lake.

Swedish public schools were pioneers when it came to implementing proper treatment solutions for kitchen exhaust air. Not only did they want to tackle potential odors, but they also wanted to start recycling the heat energy present in the exhaust air.

 

The problem.

The elementary school in question had a specific problem that they wanted help with: heat recycling, especially during the colder periods of the year.

Kitchen exhaust air coming from commercial kitchens contains a great deal of heat energy, and it is possible to reuse this energy (e.g. to heat a property) by using a heat exchanger. However, the heat exhanger is not able to optimally extract heat energy from the exhaust air if the air has not been treated well enough. In addition, if the exhaust air still contains grease when it reaches the heat exhanger, the grease can start sticking to the equipment, clogging it.

For these reasons, it is absolutely imperative to have a functioning treatment solution.

The solution.

We at Mellifiq were of course more than willing to provide a technical solution that would not disappoint! In 2020, we installed an Ozonetech RENA 40 ozone system (part of the Ozonetech RENA Kitchen Solution) in the elementary school.

The systems in our Ozonetech RENA Kitchen Solutions series are some of our most powerful ones, designed specifically to tackle kitchen exhaust air. The systems inject ozone into the kitchen ducts where it breaks down the grease and odor particles in the exhaust air. This prevents grease buildups from forming on the duct walls, greatly reducing the risk for dangerous duct fires and improving the fire safety for the whole building. Of course, any potential odor outbreaks are also prevented.

Most importantly for this school, our systems make it very easy for the heat exhanger to reuse the heat energy contained within the exhaust air.

Evaluation.

Thanks to our treatment solution for the kitchen exhaust air, the school’s heating bill is now much more manageable. They are also able to benefit from a reduced carbon footprint and a more sustainable kitchen.

In total, we have helped more than 30 schools with minimizing disruptive odors, improving their fire safety and recovering heat energy.
