Introduction.

Our current client, a prominent surface coating company with 100 years of industry experience, has had a great deal of success helping out companies in the automotive industry.

Over the years, they have developed into a full-fledged coating one-stop shop that uses electrolytic surface coating while working actively against hazardous emissions. They do this by e.g, making sure that their processes are free from cadmium and lead.

The problem.

Cyanides have been used extensively in the coating industry and remains a key component in electrolytic surface coating processes. However, metal-cyanide complexes and subsequent breakdowns of free cyanides require significant amounts of chemicals to treat; in our client’s case, they heavily relied on hypochlorite.

In these situations, a lot of sludge is produced as well and the sludge needs to be handled and transported away, leading to transportation costs and extra logistics planning.

The solution.

Mellifiq worked closely with the client to design a solution that would drastically lower the use of chemicals use by replacing it with an chemical-free oxidation process.

In less than one year, Mellifiq consulted, designed and delivered a turn-key Ozonetech RENA Vivo C-series ozone system. The system was integrated into the current coating process, which also contains flocculation and filtration processes. Our RENA Vivo systems are fitted with state-of-the-art ozone generators and an integrated gas-liquid transfer mechanism, making the treatment process extremely effective. In addition, the system sensors continously check the ozone levels in the surroundings and shut down the system in case the ozone levels start getting too high.

Evaluation.

A performance evaluation has showed that our solution has managed to remove almost 100% of the metal-cyanide and free cyanides; thanks to this, our client no longer has any need to use great amounts of hypochlorite.

The implementation of our system has saved more than 20 tons of carbon dioxide annually, almost eliminated the need to manually handle sludge and cut more than three truckloads of sludge hauling per week.
