Introduction.
On board a luxury yacht, every detail contributes to the overall guest experience—from interior design to the quality of the air onboard.
In this project, Mellifiq delivered a custom-engineered galley exhaust air treatment solution designed to significantly reduce cooking-related odors and maintain a high-quality indoor and outdoor environment at sea.
This state-of-the-art solution integrates advanced oxidation to reduce aerosol emissions and control odors, followed by multi-stage air filtration to further remove residual odor compounds – ensuring consistently high air quality throughout the vessel.
The problem.
During certain operating conditions, the combined effects of wind direction and vessel orientation at anchor resulted in cooking odors from the galley exhaust being intermittently perceived on exterior decks and in guest-accessible areas.
Technical inspections confirmed that the ventilation system was operating as designed, with no evidence of duct leakage or mechanical deficiencies. However, due to the location of the exhaust discharge, odor laden air could in some cases recirculate across deck areas before sufficient dispersion, leading to guest disturbance.
Given that space onboard such vessels is highly optimized and tightly allocated, integrating an effective odor treatment solution presented an additional challenge. Any proposed system needed not only to fit within the available footprint but also to comply with stringent marine industry regulations and standards.
Additionally, structural rerouting of the exhaust outlet was constrained by space limitations and existing installations, rendering conventional ventilation modifications impractical.
The challenge:
- In-duct treatment of odors and aerosol emissions of the exhaust air
- Prevention of odor recirculation under varying environmental and operating conditions
- Minimization of grease accumulation to reduce fire risk i maintenance requirements
- Integration within constrained onboard space without major structural modifications
- Compliance with marine safety, regulatory, and operational standards


The solution.
Mellifiq delivered a custom‑engineered galley exhaust air treatment solution, combining the Ozonetech RENA 20 with a a Nodora X multi-stage air filtration.
The solution was specifically tailored to match the configuration and spatial constraints typical for this specific high-end expedition yacht.
By significantly reducing grease accumulation in ventilation ducts, the solution not only mitigates odor emissions but also lowers the risk of duct fire and extends the overall system lifespan—delivering both immediate operational improvements and long-term value.
Evaluation.
Following installation, perceived cooking odors on exterior decks were significantly reduced, and no odor ingress into guest areas was reported during normal operation. Follow‑up inspections confirmed stable system performance and improved comfort for both guests and crew.
This reference project demonstrates how Mellifiq’s integrated Ozonetech oxidation and Nodora air filtration technologies, combined with application‑specific engineering, can effectively address complex odor challenges in marine environments where conventional ventilation solutions are insufficient.
