High-quality water treatment in hydroponic cultivation
Introduction.
The client in this project is one of the largest producers of flowers and plants in the Nordic region. The company roots go back to 1912 when its founder started selling flowers in one of Sweden’s major cities. Nowadays, they have a turnover of EUR 44 millions (2018) and supply over 550 grocery stores in Sweden with flowers. The company is especially known for its tulips.
The company has a constant focus on streamlining and increasing the quality of the entire production process. One step in that is switching from soil to hydroponics. The benefits of hydroponics are well known: one major advantage is that water consumption is reduced by 50-80%, and another one is that it is possible to grow more flowers while still reducing your carbon footprint. The production volume can be more than doubled!
The problem.
When our client made the switch from soil to hydroponics, they found themselves in need of a treatment solution for the recirculation water.
In addition, they also needed a method that would to add nutrients to the water and limit the growth of bacteria, algae and other unwanted substances.
The solution.
We at Mellifiq provided our client with a fully automatic ozone system, our Ozonetech RENA VIVO A-series, complemented by a supply of nutrients and chlorine.
Powerful ozone treatment
The reclaimed water from the cultivation process is treated with ozone that is produced on-site by the system using the oxygen in the surrounding air. The ozone is then dissolved in water which is continuously fed to the drainage tank where the treatment takes place. The purified water in the drainage tank is continuously transferred to the clean water tank.
The outgoing water from the clean water tank is then supplied with chlorine and nutrients. The chlorine serves to maintain the purity of the water by minimizing the growth of microorganisms. Nutrients are added according to what the products specifically need. The outgoing water from the clean water tank is continuously analyzed to ensure that the right things are added!
Evaluation.
The whole treatment system, comprised of our ozone system along with the added nutrients and chlorine, has freed up time for the staff. It is usually enough if the staff keeps an eye on the system and makes sure that there are nutrients in the tanks.
As a whole, this has lead to a more reliable and efficient production with less chemicals and therefore reduced operational costs.
