Reproduction company removes antibiotics from process water
Introduction.
A German company, a pioneer in the assisted animal reproduction industry, is our client in this project.
They provide high-quality artificial insemination (AI) products, and are a global leader in assisted reproduction technologies ranging from AI to in-vitro-fertilization. The company works with customers in domains such as agriculture, sports, pet breeding, veterinary and human medicine, and R&D.
The problem.
Our client coats their insemination equipment with antibiotics to prevent pathogens from spreading and causing infections. Since the production system needs to be rinsed regularly, the process water used for the washing process has a high concentration of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), more specifically 1-2 g/l of various antibiotics. Such quantities of pharmaceuticals have a negative impact on the environment and must be removed before the water is released as effluent. A common treatment option is to contract a third party that disposes of the water through thermal destruction. However, the cost for such an operation is substantial and comes with a very high energy consumption, making it unsustainable in the long run.
Having previously used UV technology and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with unsatisfactory results, our client had now decided to turn to Mellifiq for a sustainable solution that could completely remove APIs from the process water.
The solution.
Mellifiq delivered an ozone-based treatment solution consisting of our Ozonetech RENA Vivo A-series system.
The RENA Vivo system actively removes active pharmaceutical ingredients from the process water, and is able to process 1-5 m3 of water per day. The ozone system is connected to our client’s circulation system, where the water is ozonated until all the APIs are completely inactivated and rendered harmless.
Evaluation.
The advantages of our ozone solution are quite remarkable compared to their previous solution.
Our client kan now eliminate harmful chemicals from the process water, all while using much less energy compared to when they still had a UV solution. All in all, Mellifiq’s solution is much more sustainable.
