Introduction.

Large scale system for BOD and COD treatment

There is an increasing worldwide consumer demand for printed textiles, and our customer in this case, a South American textile print company, has set out to satisfy this demand for the North American and international market.

With over 400 employees and in business since 1993, the company exclusively delivers high quality consumer goods to prominent brands such as Under Armour and O’Neill.

The problem.

The process of textile screen printing requires ample amounts of solvent, which leave the factory in the form of wastewater. These compounds, such as alcohols and aldehydes, are difficult to degrade biologically or by other means. Due to tighter official effluent requirements, the factory was in dire need of an effective solution, especially since the facility could not build a new treatment plant due to lack of space.

The solution.

The company contacted Mellifiq in search of an efficient treatment system. In order to evaluate how much capacity was needed, our client decided to make use of our pilot project consulting services. Our engineers treated actual wastewater, sampled directly from the effluent stream, using our in-house pilot facility. Following extensive treatment trials—incorporating filtration, pH control and ozone oxidation—a full scale system was designed.

The treatment system includes our Ozonetech RENA Tellus X1000 water treatment system, a foam collection system, monitoring, and controls. It is possible to upgrade the delivered solution in case wastewater loads increase in the future.

The system was installed and successfully commissioned on-site by our engineers. This process included installing connections to the collection tank and calibrated sensors as well as starting up ancillary equipment like the cooling system, the foam collection system and the ozone dissolution optimization.

Evaluation.

Our oxidation treatment achieved excellent results! After we installed and commissioned the treatment solution, COD and BOD levels were reduced to below 20 ppm, well below the official effluent requirements. The system performance is continuously monitored through integrated ORP sensors and frequent lab tests measuring the biological and chemical oxygen demand.

The ozone system successfully handles 25 tons of high concentration wastewater per day.
