Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are becoming an increasing challenge for many types of industries. They are often hard to treat and can be present in the thousands of ppm in effluent streams from the coating industry, food production or process industry. The specific compounds can often be complex and typically require several treatment steps with different functions. Mellifiq provides the complete chain of systems to tackle VOC reduction for any flow.
With the advent of UV technology, disinfection was the primary focus and is still a major contributor to controlling microbes in drinking water, wastewater and clean production facilities worldwide. Both medium and low pressure UV systems, available in the Saniray Zeeron and Aurora lines, effectively disinfect air and water by breaking down and disrupting DNA strands in bacteria as well as viruses. UV systems for this purpose can be installed quickly both in open channels or in-pipe in closed UV reactors with low power consumption.
Advanced Oxidation Processes
Some substances, especially from chemical processes and manufacturing, pharmaceutical industry and other process industries, may exhibit stable and harmful properties. In such cases, Advanced Oxidation Processes (widely known as only AOP) substances can be broken down more efficiently by enhancing the formation of free radicals. Radicals are extremely reactive due to their oxidation potential caused by their unstable chemical structure.
Free radicals exist in various forms as hydroxyl (·OH) or reactive oxygen species such as superoxide. Low pressure UV systems may be in important component to induce radical formation, either on its own, or more effectively, through a combination of ozone or hypochlorite. AOP can be especially effective for PFOS/PFOA, long carbon chains or dioxane as examples. UV-based AOP can be applied in both air and water treatment applications where both ozone producing and non-ozone producing UV systems can be applied, both available in the Aurora and Zeeron product lines.
Odor emissions are one of the most common challenges facing municipalities and industrial facilities today. Various technologies may be suitable depending on the type of odor compounds, flow, temperature and other factors.
Odor compounds can have multiple sources and may be a result of hundreds of substances with various concentrations, detected in different ways by the human nose. A properly sized UV system degrades, eliminates or transforms the active odor compounds by breaking specific chemical bonds which are susceptible to different wave lengths in the UV-C spectrum.
Odors by use of UV systems can be combatted either in water phase or air phase, and can be combined with other Mellifiq technologies under our Ozonetech and Nodora brands.
