Introduction.

No chemicals and 80 % lower operating costs

Our customer this time is a Swedish food manufacturer who is part of a large Norwegian company group. The group produces pickled fish, seafood, processed potato dishes, ready meals, fruit and berry products, pickled vegetables, ketchup, sauces and breakfast cereals.

They have 1,500 employees, 11 production sites and a turnover of over 500 million euros.

The production site that we are helping out in this project focuses on Abba’s caviar, pickled herring and fish balls. The site has extensive experience in using ozone to sanitize their surfaces and process equipment.

The problem.

In the 1990s, the production site made use of large amounts of chlorine dioxide for disinfection of process equipment. This treatment solution had major disadvantages: the costs were high—over 10,000 euros per year—and they also suffered from chlorine gas emissions, which meant that the site staff regularly had to leave the site so that the chlorine could be aired out. Since the chlorine dioxide treatment negatively impacted the work environment, it was later replaced with an ozone sanitation system.

Over the years, as business grew and the production site scaled up, the ozone system capacity became more and more insufficient. This, in addition to subpar service from the supplier, made the production site start looking for a new, future-proof solution.

The solution.

Our customer had had good experiences using ozone treatment solutions previously, and they relied on us at Mellifiq to come up with a more advanced and reliable solution. In 2016 we delivered a full-scale turn-key Ozonetech RENA Vivo high-performance ozone system to the customer.

With a modular design allowing for potential capacity upgrades, the new Ozonetech system is fully automated and continously adjusts the ozone concentration in the process water. The production site also wanted to improve the reliability of our solution even further, and so, they opted for the premium version of our service agreement.  This means that we offer prolonged product responsibility, extra components and remote monitoring of the ozone system performance – enabled by O3Eye ™ – 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. Any deviations are automatically reported to our service center as soon as they occur. A premium service agreement guarantees stable operation conditions.

When we were on-site to commission the system, we also got the opportunity to optimize the production process. With ozone disinfection in place, there is no longer any need for a final rinsing. Thanks to this, water consumption has gone down considerably and down time has been shortened. There is also no risk of the municipal rinse water potentially recontaminating the equipment.
