Swedish municipality treats their water with ozone
Introduction.
Successfully reducing manganese levels in drinking water
In this Swedish municipality, citizens receive their water from several small water sources; all of these sources possess raw water of good quality. The water is purified at the municipality waterworks before it reaches the municipality inhabitants as drinking water. Similarly, all wastewater produced by the inhabitants is taken to the waterworks where it is purified in order to be released back into nature again.
Manganese is a metal found naturally in groundwater, often together with iron. Groundwater from drilled wells often contains dissolved iron and manganese.
The problem.
The raw water in the municipality groundwater well has levels of iron and manganese that exceed the official recommendations. Therefore, the water has to be treated before it is distributed to the households.
In early 2013, the municipality waterworks suffered a breakdown which meant that removing manganese from the water was no longer possible. High manganese amounts discolour the water and while the water does not pose a risk to adults, children should not drink it in any form.
The solution.
Municipality officials contacted us at Mellifiq looking for information on how ozone can be used to purify drinking water.
The waterworks was in urgent need of a treatment solution and so, in a short time, we delivered and commissioned a smaller ozone system that immediately began treating the water. When commissioning the system, we also took the opportunity to make some recommendations and help the waterworks optimize their entire system. Thanks to this, we were able to improve a number of things: we were able to optimize the amount of ozone needed for the treatment process as well as the ozone dissolving process itself.

Evaluation.
Ozone works great for purifying manganese from drinking water, and we achieved excellent results even in this case.
Thanks to our treatment solution, the municipality can now treat their water in a very reliable and cost-efficient manner!
