Tailored solution prevents H2S emissions at new biogas plant
Introduction.
This time, we’re focusing our attention on a town in the central part of Finland, situated just one hour from Helsinki.
Founded back in 1585, the town has had a growth spurt in the recent years. Now, the local authorities have decided make a sustainable investment by building a biogas plant. This site will handle 20,000 tons of organic waste every year while having a biogas capacity of 2 MW. The location of the plant has been strategically selected in order to increasing the use of biofuel in the southern part of Finland, and in the surroundings of Helsinki more specifically.
The problem.
All biogas plants produce fuel by collecting different waste materials. When organic waste is used as as production source, production sites often start suffering from pungent odor emissions. Finnish people are particularly conscious about breathing clean air, so an effort is always made to minimize any potential odors.
In conjunction with the new biogas plant being approved, odor emissions were also predicted: these would most likely lead to complaints from neighbors especially during summer. The plant owner therefore decided to take a proactive approach and incorporate an odor control system in the initial design phase.
By looking at similar biogas plants, emissions resulting from both H2S and VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) were predicted, and thus, the final solution needed to consider and remove both air pollutants.
The solution.
Since the potential odors could originate from different compounds, the final solution needed to be tailor-made in order to ensure that every pollutant would be removed. We at Mellifiq were chosen for this task thanks to our extensive experience and strong, local presence in Finland. We ended up proposing a combination of technologies as our final solution: ozonation followed by adsorption using activated carbons, with the help of our RENA Pro and Nodora X systems. These two have a very effective synergy when it comes to effectively removing pollutants.
The RENA Pro C-series ozone system was the first treatment step. The Ozonetech RENA Pro systems are Mellifiq’s premium choice for air treatment, and our C-series being one of our absolute best systems. It is also possible to upgrade your C-series system if necessary. With only a half-pallet footprint, this product removed most of the odors from the industrial airstreams thanks to the high reactivity of ozone with H2S.
After this stage, we expected to see an odor removal of at least 80 %. However, in this case, a complete odor removal was required, which is why the Nodora X3000 was also included in the final solution. The Nodora X-series are built to address the most demanding industrial air treatment requirements using activated carbon filters, and X3000 specifically handles airflows up 10,000 m³/h with further capacity upgrades being available. We chose the OCM-Sulfcat as our carbon type for the filters. Thanks to a metal-based impregnation of the substrate, this material is particularly suitable for removing odors resulting from a combination of H2S and VOC.
Evaluation.
Both treatment units were delivered during the construction of the biogas plant.
The ventilation system was connected to the RENA Pro and Nodora system, with the ventilation fan being placed at the end of the line. This configuration ensures a slight negative pressure for the process air, minimizing any risk of potential leaks. Since day one once the plant started operating, no significant odor emissions has disturbed the surroundings, and the whole treatment system has operated smoothly.
We at Mellifiq are happy to help development processes for green technology, such as biogas production, by ensuring that the air is kept clean both in the production plant and its surroundings.
