Historically significant building installs high performance solution for treating kitchen exhaust air

Scandic Grand Central Helsinki chose the environmentally friendly Ozonetech RENA Kitchen solutions

Opened in the spring of 2021, Scandic Grand Central’s new restaurant will treat the kitchen exhaust air using the renowned Ozonetech RENA kitchen solutions.

The new hotel facility from the largest hotel operator in the Nordics, Scandic Grand Central, was inaugurated in January 2021 in connection with Helsinki Central Station. Originally designed as an office space for the Finnish Railways Administration, the building was completed in 1909. The historically significant building was designed by Eliel Saarinen.

The problem

Hotel restaurant kitchens are usually operating from early morning to late night, all year long. This intense activity requires a lot from the cleaning solution to prevent grease accumulation in the air ducts. Grease in the exhaust air increases the risk of fire and enables the spread of disturbing odors caused by bacteria feeding on grease particles. In both cases, this will have negative impact on the environment.

The Solution

Scandic choose the efficient Ozonetech RENA Kitchen Solutions to clean the exhaust air, preventing the spread of disturbing odors and increasing fire safety and energy efficiency in the new Grand Central hotel.

The Ozonetech RENA-80 Kitchen solution cleans exhaust air from the two main kitchens in the hotel, with the option of using the same system to clean the air from a third kitchen.

The Ozonetech RENA Kitchen Solutions requires little storage space and is very easy to install. The solution was installed in the basement, on one of the maintenance corridors and will not cause discomfort in the kitchen. Ozone sensors are placed in the kitchen area for safety
reasons. The RENA Kitchen solution is also integrated to the building’s automation system, which alerts the property manager immediately if any disturbance occurs.

The RENA Kitchen Solutions’ control box manages the fan operation mode as well. This means that when the ventilation system is off, the supply point valve of the RENA Kitchen Solutions system will also be shut, preventing any ozone leak into the surroundings. Only when the exhaust fans start operating again and the required negative pressure is created in the duct, the supply valve opens again and injects ozone into the duct air flow.

Evaluation

The benefits of Ozonetech RENA Kitchen solution are highly appreciated at the Grand Central Hotel, as a single system manages to clean the exhaust air from multiple kitchens. The efficient and continuous cleaning of the kitchen exhaust air enables a more efficient heat recovery, which reduces the energy costs of heating the property and minimizes the need of manually cleaning of the ducts. Most importantly, the clean exhaust air reduces the risk of fire in an historical building, and, above all, it increased comfort for the hotel guests.
